Justinian and Theodora are also responsible for the rebuilding of the impressive Hagia Sophia. -ekf
Recently I was checking out some of Tumblr’s fancy new features when a disturbing trend was brought to my attention: it’s called Gratuitous Picture Of Yourself Wednesday (GPOYW). My response to this discovery went something like: “What? Does the internet really need to give its citizens any more incentive to project their egos onto the rest of the world? Really!?”
Well, rather than simply whining about GPOYW, I’m going to do something about it. As of today I am initiating Informative Picture Of Someone Else Wednesday (IPOSEW) in an effort to counterbalance the forces of ego. Feel free to follow suit.
This week: Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustinianus, also known as Justinian I or Justinian the Great. Justinian I was a Christian Emperor of the Roman Empire who set out on the ambitious renovatio imperii, or “restoration of the empire.” He was known as “the Emporer who never sleeps” because of his rigorous work ethic, and was reportedly quite approachable. He is also said to have surrounded himself with “men and women of extraordinary talent,” appointed by their ability rather than their position in the aristocracy.
Note: While I am aiming to be “informative,” I make no claims of academic rigor for IPOSEW. Most likely any information presented will be distilled directly from Wikipedia, possibly in subjects I otherwise know nothing about. Corrections are welcome
